Arbilla/Adilla Hardee

We know Adilla Hardee was born about 1879 as she is shown on the 1880 census as a one-year-old. Her father is listed as a widow; therefore, we know his wife Juda Frances Lee Hardee died between 1879 and 1880. I have searched for any records showing when she died, but have not found any. I often wonder if she died in childbirth which was common back then. Juda would have been about 41 when she gave birth.

I have no other records for Adilla and assume she died as a child.

John Perry Hardee

We first find John Perry Hardee at age three in the 1880 census of Johnson Co., Texas. That would make his birth year about 1877. He lives with his widowed father William and nine siblings. John’s mother Juda Frances Lee died the year before in 1879 so he never knew his mother. I can only guess that his older siblings helped raise him. Also living in the household are two older cousins. Joseph and Archie Favors are the children of Archibald and Jane Lee Favors. Jane Lee was a younger sister of Juda Lee Hardee, John Perry’s Mother.

There is no 1890 census so we next find John Perry in the 1900 census still living in Johnson County in the city of Cleburne. He lives with his cousin Joseph Favors. In the household is Joseph’s wife and two sons and his mother-in-law. John Perry is 24 years old, is single and works as a section hand. It is marked that he can read and write.

In 1904 there is an arrest record for J. P. Hardee. He pled guilty for theft of a horse. He was sentenced Feb. 22, 1904 and was discharged on Feb. 24, 1909. His records state he was 26 years old, 5’7 ½”, 136 lbs, dark completion, gray eyes and dark hair. He had two scars on the back of his neck, a scar in the pit of his back and two scars on the right side of his rump. He wore size 5 shoe, was married, used tobacco, had no education, was born 1879 in Texas. I am unsure of who he was married to but it may have been Lula Walker.

In 1910 he has moved to Delaware Township in Caddo County, Oklahoma and lives next door to his older sister Annie Mayfield and her husband and son. He is listed as age 30, widowed, born in Missouri and parents born in Ohio. He is a general farmer and can read and write and rents his farm. When I look at the census, the family below him has the head of household from Missouri and parents from Ohio, so I think this is an error on the census takers part. John Perry was born in Texas and parents were born in Alabama.

At some time after 1910 he returns to Texas and married Gertrude Bodine on June 1, 1914 in Ellis Co., Texas. They are listed in the 1915 city directory for Cleburne, Texas in Johnson Co. They live at 818 N. Wilhite and he is a laborer.

On June 1, 1916 they have their first son, John Thomas Hardee in Cleburne. Their second son dies hours after birth on Dec. 2, 1917 in Cleburne.

In 1918 John Perry registers for the World War I registration draft. He stated he is 39 years old and was born March 19, 1879. The 1880 census shows he was 3 which would make his birth year 1877. He works for the rail road in Cleburne and Gertrude Hardee is his nearest relative. He says he has blue eyes and black hair. I do not believe he ever served in the military.

John Perry and Gertrude have two more sons: Floyd Hardee born Feb. 12, 1920 and Zibe Brooks Hardee born March 28, 1921.

On July 25, 1923 this notice appeared in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on page 17:

                Child Accidentally Killed

CLEBURNE July 25—A bullet from a large caliber pistol which he knocked from a buggy caused the death at Keene yesterday of Floyd Hardee three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Hardee.

In December of 1924 John Perry pleas guilty of “Transporting intoxicating liquor. Possessing intoxication liquor for purpose of sale.” He is discharged August 9, 1925. His arrest record states, he is 45 years old, 5’ 6 7/8” has hazel eyes and brown hair, size 5 shoe size, married, uses tobacco, illiterate and cannot read or write, no schooling, born in 1879 in Texas and parents born in Alabama. Employed at rail road.

Their only daughter Norma Hardee was born December 23, 1927 in Texas.

The family is then found on the 1930 census living in Rush Springs, Grady Co., Oklahoma. John Perry is listed as 50 years old, born in Oklahoma and parents born in Kentucky. We know this is incorrect, I wonder if he did not trust the government and gave incorrect information or they weren’t home that day and a neighbor gave the information. We will never know.

He rents his house and works as a farm laborer. Also in the household are his wife Gertrude and children J.T (John Thomas) age 13, Brooks age 8 and Norma age 2.

 For a third time John Perry is arrested in October of 1931. His residence is listed as Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas. He pleads guilty to “possessing intoxicating liquor and maintaining a public nuisance” for a term of one year. He is discharged on June 30, 1932.

 I am unable to find John Perry in the 1940 census or his living three children. However, I did find a Gertrude Hardee listed in the 1940 census living in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma in the Central Oklahoma State Hospital. She is listed as 44 years old, born in Texas and married. I do not know why she was institutionalized here.

 In 1942 John Perry applied for Social Security and listed his birth as March 19, 1879 in Johnson Co., Texas and his parents as William T. Hardee and Frances Lee.

 I will let the newspaper tell you the next story. I was first told about this from a cousin. The 66-year-old man is John Perry Hardee.

 William Roy Hardee Is Shot to Death in Fight

William Roy Hardee 24 of 3501 Alice, was shot and killed early Sunday during a fight with a 66-year old man. The assailant suffered a fractured skull in the altercation and was taken to City-County Hospital. Detective Lieutenant Cobb who investigated described the older man as a three times convict. The 66-year-old man who told Cobb that Hardee came to the Alice Street address about 4 am Sunday and started making coffee. He said Hardee walked to his bedside a blackjack in hand and that he was slugged several times. He then obtained a revolver from beneath his pillow and shot Hardee through the chest. Justice Hurley returned an inquest verdict of murder and said Hardee apparently died instantly. The older man was booked at city jail where officers noticed the seriousness of his head injuries and took him to the hospital.

 Fatal Row to Grand Jury

Detective Lt Cobb said Monday afternoon that circumstances surrounding the altercation Sunday at 3501 Alice in which William Roy Hardee 24 was killed and a 66-year-old ex-convict suffered a fractured skull will be presented directly to the county grand jury. Funeral services for Hardee will be held Tuesday at Bridgeport Assembly' of God Church with burial in West Bridgeport Cemetery. His parents, six brothers and four sisters survive.

 From what I was told by a cousin, John Perry did not know who was attacking him when he shot him. I searched for more articles to find out what happened but could not find any more newspaper articles. I don’t know what the verdict was. The articles never mention John Perry’s name but I have copy of the death certificate for William Roy Hardee and the cause of death is listed as “Gun shot wounds inflicted by J.P. Hardee.” William Roy Hardee was John Perry Hardee’s Great Nephew.

 John Perry Hardee died on December 27, 1945 of Influenza. His death certificate stated he lived at 202 Waters in Cleburne, Texas for the past 6 months. His birth date was listed as March 19, 1879 in Texas and he was a farmer. The informant was his son, John T. Hardee and he gave the name of John Perry’s parents as Bill Hardee from Kentucky and Frances Lee from Kentucky, which is incorrect. It also listed him as widowed, but he is buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Cleburne Texas next to his wife Gertrude Hardee and her death date is listed on the tombstone as December 2, 1980.

Ida F. Hardee

Ida Frances Hardee was born about 1874 in Texas. Ida is about 17 when she marries 34-year-old Sargent Owings/Owens on September 6, 1891 in Ellis County, Texas. I don’t believe they had any children.

I don’t have any sources but others list her death in 1897. She is not found in the 1900 census.

On August 1, 1897 Sargent marries Ida’s older sister Mary Elizabeth Hardee. Mary has four children from two previous marriages. I don’t believe Mary and Sargent had any children.

Robert Lee Hardee

William and Juda moved from Alabama to Texas around 1870. Robert Lee Hardee was their first child who was born in Texas on November 19, 1873 in Van Zandt Co., Texas.

Juda died in 1879 and in 1880 the family is living in Johnson Co., Texas and William, his widowed father is a farmer.

At the age of 19 Robert married Josie Motley on July 19, 1893 in Erath Co., Texas.

I found court records dated January 23, 1894 that show the State of Texas VS R. L. Hardee, but I do not know what the case was about. It was dismissed due to “insufficiency of the evidence” and he was immediately discharged.

Their fist son, Clifford Thomas Hardee was born September 30, 1894 in Cleburne, Texas, followed by Creed Westley Hardee born April 17, 1899 in Johnson Co., Texas.

In 1900 Robert is working as a day laborer and reports on the census that he can read and write.

Daughter Irene Hardee is born September 5, 1903 but dies about 1904 and Mollie Frances Hardee is born September 25, 1905 in Johnson Co., Texas.

In 1910 the family lives at 401 Elmo and his older brother Zibe also lives with the family. They both work at the railroad. Robert works as a machinist at the railroad shop and Zibe is a helper in the roundhouse.

Their last child, a daughter, Robert Lynn Hardee, was born on September 2, 1911 in Johnson Co. Texas

When Robert registered for the WWI draft in 1918, he stated he lived at 1005 N. Border in Cleburne, Texas. He was 45 years old and worked as a truck repairer at G C & S F Railyard. He was medium height and build and had dark hair and blue eyes.

At age 60, Robert and Josie along with daughter Robbie are living in Tarrant Co. Texas in 1930. Robert is farming on a rented farm and they do not own a radio.

Robert dies on September 12, 1932 of pneumonia. He is buried in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery.

Pinkney Edward Hardee

Pinkney Edward Hardee was born in Alabama on December 22, 1869 but traveled as an infant with his parents and eight siblings overland 600 miles from Coosa County, Alabama to Van Zandt County, Texas. There the family is enumerated on the census on September 16, 1870.

By 1880 his mother has passed away and the family is living in Johnson County, Texas. Pinkney is nine years old and also living in the household are his two cousins, Joseph and Archie Favors.

On November 13, 1893 he married Camelia Alice “Allie” Carter in Ellis County, Texas.

In 1900 Pinkney and Allie live in Alvarado, Texas with their three children and his older single sister Lucinda “Cindy” who probably helped raise him after their mother died. Pinkney works for the railroad as a section hand and can read and write.

Pinkney and Allie’s three children, all born in Alvarado, Texas are:

Maude Elaine Hardee born November 11, 1894, died June 29, 1986 in MO. Married Herrick L. Gaby.

Claude G. Hardee born December 21, 1896, died April 5, 1953 in Dallas, Texas. Married “Dutch” Ethel Jones.

Pearl Olene Hardee born May 6, 1899, died May 21, 1975 CA. Married Ralph Drummond.

Allie died July 26, 1902 and Pinkney married Martha Jane Ray Flatt sometime around 1903 as they are listed together on the 1910 census still in Johnson Co., Texas. They have three children and Pinkney’s three children from his first marriage are living with them along with a 20-year-old hired hand named Tom Carter. Pinkney is now listed as a farmer who rents his farm.

Pinkney and Martha’s three children are:

Marvin Ray Hardee born June 23, 1905, may have married Thelma Nash. Married Rose Kean. 

Jewel Edna Hardee born February 17, 1906, married a Barbour.

Pinkney Thomas Hardee born June 8, 1909, married (1) Doris Ireland (2) Nellie Lee Prather.

In 1920 Pinkney, Martha and their three children now live in Ellis County, Texas.  He is a farmer and owns his farm with a mortgage.

Martha dies July 23, 1929 and I am unable to locate Pinkney in the 1930 census. But, on October 26, 1933 Pink Hardee is sentenced to two years in prison for V.D.L. (Violation of drug law) He went to jail on May 24, 1934. In the notes it stated he received a “Cond Pardon 9-8-34.”

Pinkney Edward Hardee died April 24, 1935 in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas of stomach cancer. He was 65 years old. My guess is if he had stomach cancer, he was self-medicating for pain and that is the reason he violated the drug law.

He is buried in the Venus Cemetery in Venus, Johnson Co., Texas. Written on his stone is: “Faithful to his trust.” The person who posted the photo of the stone on FindAGrave states: “This stone is hidden in between some evergreen trees that have grown up around it.”

Malinda Caroline Hardee

Malinda Caroline Hardee shows up under many different names in the census, Malinda, Lorinda, Lena, Lynn, and Caroline. She was born August 25, 1868 in Coosa County, Alabama. Her death certificate says she was born in Birmingham, Alabama but I do not believe this was correct as all the census and tax records show they lived in Coosa County, Alabama. She was the eighth child of William and Juda Hardee.

Between 1869 and 1870 the family moved from Coosa County, Alabama to Van Zandt County, Texas. By 1880 the family had settled in Johnson County, Texas.

On April 28, 1888 Malinda married William P. Parker in Johnson Co., Texas. They had two girls, Artie Mae “Marnie” Parker born February 14, 1889 in Cleburne, Texas and Julia Clause Parker born November 25, 1890 in Cleburne, Texas.

I do not know what happened to William Parker, but Malinda married James Thomas Adams on November 4, 1894. James work for the railroad and in 1900 the family of four are living in Cleburne, Texas.

They live out their lives in Cleburne, Texas and James dies April 10, 1927 of the flu. In 1930 she owns her home worth $1500 and her nine-year-old niece lives with her as does her older single brother, Zibe Hardee.

In 1940 she is living with her granddaughter’s family Mabel and John Wyatt. Malinda died December 15, 1953 of breast cancer at the age of 85. She is buried at Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, Texas.

Sabitha Annie Hardee

In 1865 William Thomas Hardee was serving in the Civil war. He was captured near Petersburg on March 25 and became a prisoner of war on March 27, 1865. When Sabitha was born on April 12, 1865 her father was a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. William was released on June 13, 1865.

Her mother Juda Frances was alone at the family homestead in Coosa County, Alabama with six other children ranging in ages of 3-9 years old. I can only hope she had family around to help her, because I couldn’t image running a farm and raising seven children by myself.

Between 1869 and 1870 the family of 11 moved from Coosa County, Alabama to Van Zandt County, Texas. Sabitha would have been about five years old when they took the 600-mile journey overland.

In 1870 the family is living next door to Williams widowed mother, Tabitha. I have often wondered if this was the reason they moved to Texas.

On August 27, 1884 Sabitha marries James Rufus Mayfield in Parker County, Texas. They live in Wise County, Texas according to the 1900 census and she has had five children but only two are living. There children are Annie born Dec 1889 and Josie born March 1892.

They move to Delaware Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma and are listed on the 1910 census as renting a farm. Their son James Booth born November 1900 is the only child in the household. Her widowed younger brother, John Perry Hardee lives with them.

In 1920 they are still farming in Caddo County, Oklahoma and their son and his wife, Ila live with them.

Their daughter Josie Mayfield Anderson dies June 11, 1920 at the age of 28. In the 1930 census their 21-year-old granddaughter, Anna E. Anderson lives with them.  I would guess they took her in to raise her as her father died in 1925. Also, in the household is Sabitha’s older widowed sister Sarah Jane “Sally” Pully. They are all now living in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma.

James Mayfield dies in 1937 and in 1940 Sabitha listed as Anna is living with her daughter and son-in-law Annie and Casper Meetings in Ninnekah, Grady County, Oklahoma.  Also living in the household is Sabitha’s brother-in-law Fred Taylor. Fred had been married to her sister Lucinda “Cindy” Hardee Taylor.

Sabitha died March 31, 1950 and is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma.

William R. Hardee

Not much is known about William R. Hardee. He was born about 1863 in Alabama. He moved with the family about 1869/1870 to Van Zandt County, Texas and is listed in the 1880 census living with his father and siblings in Johnson Co., Texas. He is 15 and is not attending school and cannot read or write.

There is no 1890 census and no other records have been located.

Lucinda J. “Cindy” Hardee

Lucinda J. Hardee was the fifth child of William and Juda Hardee. Her name in records is listed as Lucinda or Cindy/Cinda/Sindy. She was born April of 1861 or 1862 in Alabama. I believe about 1869 or 1870 her family traveled to Van Zandt County, Texas when she was about 7 or 8 years old.

The family is found in 1870 living in Van Zandt Co., Texas and in 1880 the family is living in Johnson Co., Texas. Lucinda is listed in both as single and she is 27 years old in 1880.

In 1900, both her parents have died and she is living as a single female with her younger brother Pink Hardee and his wife and children in Alvarado, Johnson Co., Texas. She is listed as Sindy and it lists her birth date as April 1861 making her 39 years old. This conflicts with the 1870 census which shows her as eight years old and since the census was taken after April, I would guess 1862 is the correct year. However, her younger brother was born January 19, 1860 so it is feasible she could have been born in April of 1861.

On June 12, 1904 Lucinda married S. Fred Taylor in Johnson Co., Texas. In 1910 Lucinda and Fred are living in Parker County, Texas and Fred is a farmer. This is Fred’s second marriage and they have a seven-year-old girl living with them who is from his first marriage named Hatty Taylor.

By 1920 they have moved to Rush Springs, Grady Co., Oklahoma and all three are listed together. Fred is still farming and has a mortgage on the land he owns.

In 1920 just Fred and Lucinda are listed on the census in Rush Springs, Oklahoma and they have a 29 year old servant living with them.

I have no death information for Lucinda. Her husband Fred is listed in the 1940 census as a widow so I would assume she died between 1930-1940. In 1940 Fred is living with his wife’s niece and her husband, Casper and Annie Mayfield Meetings. Also living in the household is the mother of Annie, and Lucinda’s widowed sister, Anna Mayfield. They live in Ninnekah, Grady Co., Oklahoma.

Samuel Burel Hardee

Next in the series of William and Juda Hardee’s children is my Great Grandfather Samuel Burel Hardee. He was born Jan. 26, 1860 in Alabama. He was most likely born in Coosa County, Alabama as he was listed as ½ years old in the 1860 census. Sam would have been two years old when his father, William Hardee went away to join the Civil war and five when he returned.

Around 1869 they moved to Van Zandt County, Texas and lived near William Hardee’s widowed mother Tabitha Hardee.

In 1880 Sam would have been 20 years old but I cannot locate him in the census. His widowed father and siblings were now living in Johnson Co., Texas.

When Sam was 26 years old, he married 16-year-old Georgiana Clarissa Ransom on August 22, 1886 in Parker County, Texas. They are listed as S.B Hardee and Miss Clersy Ransom on the marriage record and Mr. S. B. Hardee and Miss G.A.C. Ransom on the marriage certificate. Sam is listed from Johnson Co. and Georgia is listed from Parker County and they married at her home.

Their first child William Russell Hardee was born April 3, 1888 in Wise County, Texas. Followed by Samuel Burel Hardee Jr. on January 22, 1890 in Decatur, Wise Co., Texas. Then daughters, Ada Frances Hardee born March 5, 1892 and Ida Lou Hardee born March 30, 1894, both born in Decatur, Wise Co., Texas.

I have a deed dated Nov. 21, 1895 showing “Sam Hardy and wife   Hardy” purchased land “…on the West Fork of the Trinity River about 10 miles S. W. from Decatur being 198 ¾ acres more or less…” for $1,000. They paid $300 cash and then $200 at 8 per cent interest per annum due every 6 months till paid.

On October 19, 1896 they had their fifth child “Buster” Edward Thomas Hardee born in Wise Co., Texas.

Sam purchased 40 more acres on July 25, 1899 for $250 cash in his name only. This time his name is spelled S. B. Hardee.

Another daughter is born August 11, 1899 in Wise Co., Texas, Lillie Vester Hardee and in the 1900 census the family is living in Wise Co., Texas. Sam owns his farm and has a mortgage and is listed as a farmer. He cannot read or write and has been married for 14 years. Wife is listed as Clarissa and has had six children and all six are alive. The children are William, Samuel, Ada, Ida, Edward T. and Lillie V.

My Grandfather, Joseph Abraham Hardee is born January 6, 1902 in Decatur, Wise Co., Texas. On November 27, 1903 a deed is recorded showing S. B. Hardee and G.A.C. Hardee wife of S.B. Hardee sold 40 acres for $200 in Wise County, Texas.

Daughter Mary Caroline Hardee is born August 12, 1906 in Decatur, Wise Co., Texas, followed by sister Edna Mae Hardee born April 30, 1910 in Wise Co., Texas.

The 1910 census shows the family still living in Decatur, Wise Co., Texas. This census shows Sam can read and write and that he is a farmer working on his own account and rents the farm. He has been married 23 years and his wife listed as Georgia A. has eight children born and living. (At age 40 she is pregnant with her last child, Edna who will be born in less than three weeks.) Also living in the household is 16-year-old daughter Ida Hardee and her 27-year-old husband, John Barber. They have been married one year.

In 1920 the family is listed as living in Rhome, Wise Co., Texas and the household consists of Sam and Georgia A., Joe, Mary, Edna Mae and Sam’s mother in law Marguaretta Ransom. The next family listed is his oldest son William R. Hardee and his wife and four children. This census shows Sam is a laborer on a farm he rents and cannot read and write.

Sam Hardee died June 28, 1929. His obituary was listed in the Decatur News on July 5, 1929 front page:

S.B. Hardee

S.B. Hardee died at his home in Newark, Saturday, June 29, 1929. Funeral services were held in Newark Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Brammer officiating. Internment in Dido cemetery. Mr. Hardee was a brother-in-law of John Ransome (sic) of near Decatur.

The informant on his death certificate was one of his sons and he listed Sam’s father as J.W. Hardee and his mother as Georgia Ransom. Both are incorrect as Georgia was Sam’s wife and his father was William T. Hardee. His birth date is also listed incorrectly as Jan. 26, 1859, should be 1860. Sam was 69 years old when he died but his age is incorrectly listed as 60. The cause of death only listed that there was “No medical attendant.”

I only know the basics about Samuel Hardee from what I have been able to find in written sources. I really haven't heard any stories about Sam. The stories are what make the person come alive. If anyone know any stories about how life was growing up for Sam or his brothers, I would love to hear them.

All the children stayed in Texas except the last two daughters, Mary and Edna who moved with their families to California. We are just now connecting again with our California Hardee relatives.

Zibe Brooks Hardee

Zibe Brooks Hardee was the third child of William and Juda Hardee. Zibe was born Sept. 4, 1859 in Alabama. He never married and is always listed in the census as single.

He is first listed with his family in the 1860 Alabama census as a one year old. His brother Pinkney Hardee was born Dec. 22, 1869 in Alabama so the family must have traveled to Van Zandt County, Texas sometime between then and Sept. 16, 1870 when the family is listed in the census and he is listed as 11 years old.

In 1880 he is living in Johnson Co., Texas as a single 21-year-old farm laborer with Abraham Arnold and his family. I don’t know of any connection with the Arnold family. But, Zibe’s father and siblings are living one family away, so they are nearby.

By 1900 both his parents have died. He is still living in Johnson County, Texas and is listed as a boarder in the household of the Killough family. He is listed as Zide Hardie age 38 and working as farm laborer.

In 1910 Zibe is living with his younger brother Robert Hardee and his family. They live at 401 Elmo St. in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas. His name is listed as Side and he is 46 years old. His brother works as a machinist at the railroad shop. Zibe works as a hostler helper at the railroad roundhouse. Looking at a map they lived near the railroad yard and almost everyone listed on this census page works for the railroad.

I did not know what a hostler was so I looked it up. A hostler is the person who receives the locomotive as they come in and cares for them in the roundhouse. They have them clean and ready for departure when needed.

Robert, Clifford T. and Zibe B. are all listed in the 1915 Cleburne City Directory living at 401 Elmo. Clifford T. is Robert’s son. Clifford is listed as a laborer, Robert as a truckman at G C & S F railroad and Zibe is a helper at G C & S F railroad.

He still lives with his brother in 1920. Zibe is listed as 62 years old and a hostler at the roundhouse.

He lives with his younger widowed sister Caroline in 1930. They live on 613 Royal St. in Cleburne, Texas, still near the railroad yard. Even though it’s been 10 years since the 1920 census he has only aged five years as he is listed as 67 years old but still works as a hostler helper in the shops.

Zibe Brooks Hardee died April 15, 1932 of influenzas and pneumonia. He was still living with his sister Caroline when he died. The informant on the death certificate was C.W. Hardee which I assume is Creed Westly Hardee, Zibe’s nephew from his brother Robert. C.W. Hardee gave his birthdate as Sept. 4, 1874. The year is incorrect as Zibe is listed in the 1860 census as one years old.  He is buried in the Cleburne Memorial Cemetery in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas.

Five months later his brother Robert dies of pneumonia. 

Even though Zibe never married or had children he will not be forgotten.

Sarah Jane “Sally” Hardee

Sarah Jane “Sally” Hardee was the second child of William and Juda Hardee. Sarah was born December 23, 1857 in Alabama. She is listed in the 1860 U. S. Census in Coosa Co., Alabama and is 3 years old. Next, she is listed as Jane in the 1870 U.S. Census in Van Zandt Co., Texas and is 12 years old.

On December 22, 1878 she married William A. Pulley in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas. They had eight children: Eugene Pulley born about 1879; Amy Pulley born about 1883; Leota Oline Pulley born 1885 and died 1946; Lettie A. Pulley born 1890 and died 1962; Lester William Pulley born 1891 and died 1962; Vivian Beatrice Pulley born 1894; Trudie Ellen Pulley bor 1895 and died 1958 and Chester W. Pulley born 1898 and died 1901.

In the 1920 U.S. census for Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas Sarah is living with her son and listed as a widow.

In 1930 Sarah, listed as Sallie J. is living with her sister and brother in law James and Annie Mayfield in Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma, again listed as a widow.

Sarah died on June 9, 1935 in Cleveland Co., Oklahoma and is buried in Moore Cemetery in Cleveland Co., Oklahoma.

Mary Elizabeth Hardee

 Mary Elizabeth Hardee was William and Juda’s first child. Mary was born October 20, 1856 in Alabama. She is in the 1860 U.S. census in Coosa Co., Alabama as five years old. In 1870 she is in the census for Van Zandt Co., Texas as 15 years old. Her mother Juda died in 1879 and Mary is still living at home in 1880 in Johnson Co., Texas as a single 22-year-old. (She was actually 24.)  Her youngest sibling is only one year old, so I would assume since her mother had passed, she was the one taking care of her siblings.

On October 5, 1884 Mary married William Copeland in Parker Co., Texas. They had three children:

John C. Copeland born March 1886 in Texas and died in 1911.

Willie Melinda Copeland born November 5, 1887 born in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas and died July 9, 1951. She married Howard Luther Hall on November 23, 1904 in Johnson Co., Texas. They had seven children.

Ima Mae Copeland born May 11, 1889 in Keene, Johnson Co., Texas and died February 14, 1989 in Contras Costa, California. She married Claude Edgar Lee and they had five children.

William Copeland died in 1890 and Mary married W. R. Parsons on December 2, 1891 in Ellis Co., Texas. They had one son named Lee Parsons born October 1892 in Texas. He married Ora Lee Miller.

I don’t know what happened to W.R. Parsons but on July 31, 1897 Mary married Sargent Owings/Owens. Mary and Sargent are listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census living in Johnson Co., Texas.

The 1921 city directory shows Mary and Sargent lived at 212 S. Washington Ave., in Cleburne, Johnson Co., Texas.

Mary died December 23, 1921 and is buried in Hopewell cemetery in Keene, Johnson Co., Texas.

I have written about all of Ziba's children, so I wanted to do a recap.

Ziba Hardee married (1) Peggy Mitchell on 6 Feb 1813 in Baldwin County, Georgia. Children are:

Joel Hardee born June 8, 1814 in Baldwin Co., Georgie married (1) Isabel Coker on June 18, 1835, (2) Elizabeth Devon on June 12, 1857. Nine children.

John Hardee born about 1816 in Georgia married Sabbetha Brooks on February 15, 1834 in Monroe Co., Alabama. No children.

Elafare Susan Hardee born October 24, 1822 in Monroe County, Alabama. Married John Fore on January 2, 1836 in Monroe Co., AL. Six children. 

Ziba Hardee married (2) Tabitha Brooks date unknown. They had 11 children: 

James Edward Hardee born about 1825 in Coosa Co., Alabama. He married (Susan) and had one child named Redin Hardee. He married (2) Melissa Geddens February 2, 1893 in Alabama. They had four children.

Sarah Jane Hardee was born about 1831 in Alabama. She married Green Wood January 16, 1849 in Coosa Co., Alabama.  They had five children.

Martha Ellen Hardee was born June 1833 in Alabama. She married Russell Butler June 26, 1853 in Rockford, Coosa Co., Alabama. They had 13 children.

William Thomas Hardee was born March 10, 1836 in Hatchet Creek, Coosa Co., Alabama. He married Juda Lee on Nov. 19, 1854 in Coosa Co., Alabama. They had 13 children.

Samuel Hardee was born about 1840 in Alabama. No further information.

Bryant Stillwell Hardee was born about 1842 in Alabama. He married (1) Mary Jane Patrick and they had two children. He married (2) Virginia Mason on March 22, 1894 in Alabama. They had four children.

Thomas Hardee was born about 1844 in Alabama. No further information.

 Sabitha Carolina Hardee was born August 3, 1845 in Coosa Co., Alabama. she married Littleton Davidson on Feb. 15, 1866 in Van Zandt Co., Texas. They had five children.

Julia Ann Hardee was born about 1848 in Coosa Co., Alabama. she married Andrew Cain on April 8, 1866 in Van Zandt Co., Texas. They had eight children.

Pinkney Taylor Hardee was born August 23, 1851 in Coosa Co., Alabama. He married Mary Eliza Merrill. They had ten children.

Missouri Elizabeth Hardee was born March 14, 1854 in Alabama. She married John Tomlinson Feb. 5, 1872 in Van Zandt Co., Texas. They had seven children.

Missouri Hardee was born March 14, 1854 in Alabama. Some people have Missouri Hardee listed as William and Juda's first child. I believe she is Ziba and Tabitha's last child. (William Hardee is a son of Ziba and Tabitha.)

No census record has been found for Ziba and Tabitha for 1860. However, I do have the 1860 census for William and Juda and Missouri is not listed in their household. If she was their first child she would be in their household.

Also, Missouri was born in March of 1854 and William and Juda were married in November of 1854. No way during that time would a couple have a child out of wedlock. 

Ziba and family moved to Texas around 1861 and Ziba died in 1862. Missouri would have only been eight. In the 1870 census Tabitha listed as Sybatha is listed as head of household and has her son Pinkney Hardy age 18 and a female listed as Mosaria Hardy. I believe this is Missouri and she is the last child of Ziba. 

William and Juda lived next door to his mother and siblings in 1870, I believe they would have been a big part of Missouri's life. 

When Missouri died her daughter in law listed the father as William Hardee and the mother as Don't know. I think this is were the confusion of who her parents are came from. 

Missouri Hardee married John Miles Tomlinson on February 5, 1872 in Van Zandt County, Texas. 

In 1880 they are living in McMullen County, Texas.

I don't find them again till 1920 and they are living with their son James "Jim" Tomlinson and family in Eddy County, New Mexico.

John Tomlinson died July 3, 1920 and is buried in Artesia, Eddy Co., NM.

In 1940 Missouri is living with her son James Tomlinson and family in Coconina County, Arizona. 

Missouri died Septemeber 8, 1947 in Flagstaff, Coconino Co., AZ. She is buried in Artisia, NM with her husband.

Ziba and Tabitha's tenth child was Pinkney Taylor Hardee. I've also seen it spelled Pinckney,  believe he was called Pink for short. Pink was born August 23, 1851 in Talladega Springs, Coosa County, Alabama.
He traveled with his family and siblings about 1861 to Van Zandt County, Texas.

On July 28, 1872 he married Mary E. Bryant in Van Zandt County, Texas. Mary had previously been married and brought two children into the marriage.

In 1880 he is still living in Van Zandt Count, Texas with his wife and children and his widowed mother, listed as Sabitha is also living with the family.

Pink and Mary Hardee had ten children: Sarah Jane Hardee born Jun 4, 1873 died Jun 8, 1873; P. S. Hardee born Jan 31, 1875; William Taylor Hardee born May 1877 died 1916; Mary Jane "Mollie" Hardee (Coker) born Mar 12, 1880 died Dec 16, 1950: Infant Hardee born Feb 18, 1882 died Feb 19, 1882; John Pinkney Hardee born Mar 18, 1883 died Nov 29 1946; Rosa Lee Hardee (Cade) born May 31, 1885 died Jan 3, 1980; Infant Hardee born Oct 8, 1887 died Oct 29 1887; Julia Florence Hardee (Williams) born Oct 20, 1888 died Oct 20 1977; and Edward Brooks Hardee born Feb 7 1892 died Sep 5, 1977.

Pink Hardee died Jan. 7, 1927 and is buried in Chandler, Henderson Co., Texas. Chandler is where his son Edward Brooks Hardee was living.

Ziba and Tabitha's ninth child was Julia Ann Hardee. She was born 1848 in Coosa County, Alabama.
She traveled with her family about 1861 to Van Zandt County, Texas.
There she married Andrew Jackson Cain on April 8, 1866 in Van Zandt County, Texas.
In 1870 they lived in Van Zandt County, Texas, but in 1880 they lived in Hopkins County, Texas and in 1900 they lived in Wood County, Texas.
They had nine children but only four were living in 1900 according to the census. Known children are: William Thomas Cain born about 1866; Sybatha Ellin Cain (Choat) born August 1870, died 1956; M. J. Cain born about 1877; Rosa Cain born about 1879; Willie Bell Cain (Strange) born 1882, died February 11, 1970; Claude Cullers Cain born June 6, 1887, died June 2, 1946; Gertrude Cain; and Dollie Cain.
Julie Ann Hardee Cain died March 29, 1906 in Wood County, Texas.

Sabitha Caroline/Carolina Hardee

Ziba and Tabitha's eighth child was Sabitha Caroline/Carolina Hardee. She was born August 3, 1845 in Talladega Springs, Coosa County, Alabama.

She was about 16 when she traveled with her family by ox cart train to Van Zandt County, Texas. 

On February 15, 1866 she married Littleton Davidson in Van Zandt County, Texas.

They had seven children but three died young. I do not know the names of two of the deceased children: Lou Emma Davidson born November 28, 1866 and died November 13, 1946. Verner Littleton Davidson born December 15, 1871 and died May 3, 1930. William Asbury Davidson born April 27, 1879 died March 13, 1957. Lenora Eugene Davidson born November 18, 1880 and died September 15, 1959. Ophelia I. Davidson born July 4, 1885 and died November 2, 1886.

All their children were born and died in Van Zandt County, Texas. 

Littleton Davidson was a farmer and he built and ran one of the first cotton gins in the area. He moved a few miles and built a second cotton gin, grist mill and a general store. Littleton was appointed postmaster of Primrose, Texas in 1902 and ran the post office from his general store until 1910.

Ziba and Tabitha's seventh child was Thomas Hardee. He was born about 1844 in Alabama.
Thomas is listed in the 1850 census with his family and is 6 years old. I have not been able to find the family in the 1860 census and I have no other records on Thomas Hardee.
I have seen some people say he was killed in the Civil War, but I have not found any record that I think may be this Thomas.
I did search the Texas unit that Samuel and Bryant enlisted in but his name is not listed.

Bryant S. Hardee

Bryant S. Hardee is the sixth child of Ziba and Tabitha Hardee. Bryant was born about September 1842 in Coosa County, Alabama. 

I believe Bryant traveled with his family to Texas around 1861. In the 1861 tax records for Van Zandt Count, Texas Bryant is listed next to his father Ziba owning 40 acres worth $120. He paid .15 tax. In 1862 Bryant owns 120 acres.

Bryant Hardee enlisted in the civil war on September 16, 1861 at Quitman Texas. He served in Company H of the 10th Regiment of Confederate States Calvary. (This is the same unit Samuel Hardee served in, which makes a good argument that this Samuel Hardee is his brother.)

Bryant received a Certificate of Disability on April 30, 1863 that reads:

...he was born in Coosa County in the State of Alabama is Twenty Two years of age, five feet eight inches high, dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty 60 day.

Station: Shelbyville, Tenn

Date: April 30, 1863

I certify that I have carefully examined the said B. S. Hardee of Captain T. W. Summers Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of gunshot wound received through the thigh at the battle of Richmond, KY. Aug. 30, 1862, fracturing the femur completely. I further declare my belief that said soldier will not be able to resume his duties in a less period than twelve months.

He was discharged July 30, 1863 by order of Gen. Bragg.

Sometime after the civil war Bryant to Monroe County, Alabama where his two older half brothers lived. 

In 1866 he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended the Lone Star, Alabama Branch.

On June 2, 1964 he married Mary Jane Patrick who was 12 years older then him. 

In the 1870 census Bryant lived next door to his half brother John Hardee. (Who some say also joined the LDS church.) Bryant and Jane had a five year old daughter and they also had another female named Mary who was 13 years old and listed as black and a laborer.

In 1880 Bryant and wife Jane have two girls, Mary P. and Elvira M. Hardee. Brother John still lives close.

M. Jane Hardee died in 1894 and Bryant married Virginia Mason on March 22, 1894.

In the 1900 census Bryant and wife Virginia have two daughters listed as Emma T. and Sugar.

In the 1910 census Bryant and wife Virginia have three daughters, Emma F., Willie Mae (Sugar) and Maggie I.

In the 1920 census only Willie Mae and Maggie are living in the household with their parents. 

Bryant Hardee died October 1, 1922 in Monroe County, Alabama. He was 80 years old.
